This is me, 3 years ago. As you can see I am wearing something over my shirt, It’s a orthopaedic back brace for scoliosis.

I was diagnosed with double thoracic-lumbar scoliosis during the summer of 2009.

It was horrible, it felt like torture, having to wear a metal back brace while enduring awkward years of your highschool life was plain nightmare. I cried the night I first wore it. I was asked to wear it 23 hours a day, everyday, even when I’m sleeping.

Now, 3 years later, I was advised to stop wearing them. My doctor still continually checks my backbone in case my spinal curvature increases but thankfully it stays the same. I try to maintain a healthy active lifestyle until I can finally be truly free of my condition.

Wearing back braces has enabled me to see things in a different light. I don’t really regret having to wear them even though it’s not easy. 

this experience taught me that you don’t have to fit in. As cruel as society may seem, there are still people bound to accept you for who you are. And in the end, they are the people who are worth keeping
